Money management skills do not come easy. The education system and life in general hardly prepare you for the task of handling money. Whilst paying rent, phone bills and other menial things become easy – learning to invest in yourself is entirely different. Below are three simple, but valuable tips for investing in yourself… without spending a penny.
Many people like to say they read, when was the last time they read something without a Kardashian on the cover? Great books have pages of ideas, creative expression, and stress relief waiting to be opened. Research shows that staying mentally stimulated via reading can slow the progress of (or possibly even prevent) Alzheimer’s and Dementia. Beyond that it can be one of the easiest ways to unwind after a stressful day and focus on something else.
Reading doesn’t have to cost money either. Amazon gives you access to hundreds of free books. Your local university or public library will have plenty of new material, and much of it can be accessed online. Lots of classic stories such as Frankenstein or Romeo & Juliet are available in a variety of places online. Google Books is a great resource for free, full-text books.
Pay it Forward
Remember: everyone is going through their own life, and sometimes it bites. Instead of relying on others, we can invite them to rely on us. In addition to making you feel better, doing something nice for someone else can make the day better for at least two people. Try giving someone a thoughtful thank you note, or buying a meal for a homeless person. You’re allowed to feel good for doing good things, and don’t let anyone tell you that it’s selfish.
Nurture Your Body
Eating expensive organic food or dancing Zumba may seem like the easiest way to aide your body to glory. However, those things cost money. With the advent of the internet, use your fingers to type away at your keyboard and find local, free, healthy experiences. Free Yoga tutorials, work out groups, and recipe guides will stop you from wasting money. Don’t bother buying that expensive gym membership. You can do it yourself, and get the body you want without spending a fortune.
